No more subsidies for electric cars in Delhi: Tata Nexon EV, MG ZS EV & more are getting expensive

Since over 1,000 electric cars have been sold in the state capital since the EV policy was announced, buying an electric car in Delhi is no longer subsidized.

The government is pushing the adoption of electric vehicles by offering subsidies and other benefits to electric vehicle buyers. However, the Delhi government has stopped offering incentives to buyers who choose an electric car. “Delhi has no plans to increase subsidies for the purchase of electric cars as the AAP government’s efforts in electric four-wheelers have gained the necessary momentum,” said Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot.

The EV policy for the first few electric vehicles introduced in Delhi last year was intended to offer subsidies only to buyers of the first 1,000 electric cars. Interestingly, the first thousand electric cars have already been sold in the country’s capital, so no subsidy is granted to new buyers.

Speaking of the amount, Rs. 10,000 per kWh (battery capacity) has been offered by the government with a higher limit of Rs. 1.15 lakh. In addition, no vehicle tax and registration fees were incurred for these vehicles. This allowed models such as the Tata Nexon EV, Tata Tigor EV, MG ZS EV and more to come up with reduced costs.

Nonetheless, the Delhi government will continue to offer subsidies to buyers of two-wheelers, three-wheelers and trucks. These vehicles come with a grant of Rs. 5,000 per kWh of battery capacity with a higher limit of Rs. 30,000 per vehicle. Unlike electric cars, there is no limit to the number of vehicles that can receive this subsidy.

There are currently a total of 12 electric cars sold in the country. If the government didn’t have the limit of 1,000 vehicles, buyers would have advantages in models like the Tata Nexon EV, Tata Tigor EV, MG ZS EV, Hyundai Kona Electric, BYD E6, Mahindra E Verito, Mercedes-Benz EQC, Jaguar I-Pace , Audi E-Tron, Audi E-Tron Sportback, Audi RS etron GT and Audi etron GT.
